He Said We're Covid-Positive

5/1/2020

Katie: Were you surprised that your dad was Covid-positive?

Nicole: Yes and no. My dad works at one of the hospitals here in Chicago. Since he’s the Director of the mental health department and the Vice President of the nursing department, he visits with patients and medical providers on a regular basis. He oversees those who’re of a certain age bracket, and it’s been confirmed that he got it from one of his patients.

Katie: Were you scared?

Nicole: Yes, I definitely was scared. My dad was tested Covid-positive on a Monday. He had a fluctuating temperature. On the second Saturday, about 14 days into being Covid-positive, his oxygen level plummeted from 92 to 85 in about 15 minutes. We immediately took him to the hospital. Then, the day after we dropped him off, my mom started showing symptoms.

Katie: Were you distraught? Did faith help you? Did it play a part during this entire process?

Nicole: I detached myself from the situation. I didn’t want to start spiraling to a point I couldn’t help those who needed me. When my mom started showing symptoms, I felt like I was getting into a coma. It made a tight situation even tighter. I didn’t want to pray and read scriptures. Going to God is a very vulnerable thing to experience when you’re going through a certain ailment. Going to God meant I had to confront the risks that my dad might die, my mom might end up in the hospital, and I’d be alone. And, I was stressed that my mom would worry about me.

I deliberately hid from God a couple of times. It was as if I experienced a sense of denial. I had a hard time praying, but I knew the peace I experienced on the the day we dropped my dad off at the hospital was the result of God’s providence. And my dad and my mom are now Covid-19 free.
